Wimbledon and Putney Commons Strategic Masterplan

London, UK

Working with heritage business planners Barker Langham and architects IF_DO, we created a strategic masterplan to manage conservation, enhance accessibility and improve the built environment of the Commons. Two key destination hubs will be created as gateways to the Commons, exemplar experiences for existing and new audiences.

Two scales of study were carried out:

  • Intensive: concentrated interventions around visitor experience hubs (capex budget)

  • Extensive: site wide strategies for long-term management and evolution of the landscape and ecology (opex budget)

We provided spatial planning at key hubs to help ensure the new facilities would interface sympathetically with the cherished landscape character.

Underpinning this work is a drive to protect the ‘wildness’ and the much loved landscape character of the Commons. Many of the long-term management strategies involved adjusting the operations within existing budgets to shift how the landscape evolves over time to improve biodiversity and increase ecological resilience.
