Astley Estate
London, UK
MRG Studio have been working with Archio Architects and Southwark Council to develop a new landscape and public realm around a proposed new eight-storey residential building which would provide 20 new council homes at Astley Estate in Bermondsey. If the development goes ahead, the new building, designed by Archio, would include larger four and five bedroom homes and wheelchair accessible homes and, at the ground floor level, would create new landscape micro-climates between the residential buildings. We propose to make the east-west and north-south pedestrian routes through the estate more inviting and fully accessible. The development would also create an enlarged and refurbished playground, as well as new landscaped play areas for older children alongside.
Further estate-wide improvements would include new bin and cycle storage locations, car access control points, as well as key landscape interventions to increase the variety of biodiverse habitats on site. This would create safer and more inclusive spaces where residents would enjoy being outside in their own estate.
