Angel Square

London, UK

Working with AHMM, MRG Studio developed landscape proposals for Angel Square in 2020. Our design tested and set out the parameters for planting to establish and thrive across this site, providing information to the wider design team to coordinate implications for architectural, structural and M&E design, maintenance, as well as capital and operational budgets.

Although we included extensive planting in external facades in our initial feasibility studies, the final design proposals focussed on the internal courtyard hard and soft landscape.

Our inspiration drew from extensive research on the heritage and history of the site: Drover roads were ancient routes that criss-crossed the country, connecting farmers to towns and cities. Holloways were often a feature where drovers roads reached the summit of a hill. Holloway Road, the northern continuation of Islington High Street, was one of these. Our design proposal re-conceived the Angel Square courtyard as a ‘holloway’.
